Art Against Odds

Art Against Odds is a dissertation film project I created in 2023 as part of my Anthropology and Visual Practice undergraduate degree at Goldsmiths University.

Framed by the broader question of how market forces shape art, I interviewed two emerging female artists from Goldsmiths to understand their experiences entering the creative world. Their stories revealed three key challenges that emerging artists face: gaining recognition, balancing market demands, and adapting to technological advances. Recognition requires navigating networks and trends, often pressuring artists to compromise their vision. The art market’s focus on commercial viability forces many to prioritize profitability over authenticity. Meanwhile, rapid technological change offers opportunities but demands constant adaptation, which can hinder deeper exploration.

The film ultimately sheds light on the struggle to sustain authentic, passion-driven practices in a market-driven world. The film celebrates the resilience of young artists navigating these obstacles while reflecting on the broader question: what kind of art do we want in society, and what purpose should it serve?
